One-minute film “Gull” created by NC State dance director Tara Mullins and assistant professor of communications at Elon University Doug Kass was selected for seven national and international film festivals and won Best Performance Art 360 at the Rhode Island’s Avalonia Film Festival and Best Editing at the Free Spirit International Film Festival in Dharamsala, India.

“Gull is about soaring, gliding, climbing, flying and simply reaching new heights,” Mullins said.

The film was created from the original footage from Above the Trees (2016), another work by Mullins and Kass, and demonstrates the range of artistic choices that can be made with the same material.

Shot primarily at Falls Lake in north Raleigh, “Gull” captures NC State dance student Gini Brown, a biochemistry and plant biology major, in a choreographed dance by Mullins with birds soaring over the lake.

“Gull” and “Above the Trees” will be presented on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State as part of Unfiltered Response: Faculty Dances. For more information about the event, please visit this page.
